A instalação que a artista Susan Stockwell concebeu para as comemorações do aniversário de Florence Nightingale a terem lugar no mês que vem no museu que lhe é dedicado em Londres.
Susan Stockwell usou uma velha cama victoriana de latão e simulou um colchão com as páginas das edições de muitos dos livros escritos pela homenageada aquando da sua longa convalescença depois do regresso da guerra da Crimeia. Florence Nightingale foi autora de mais de 200 livros, panfletos e artigos sobre enfermagem e organização hospitalar, geralmente reconhecidos como tendo servido de pilar ao desenvolvimento da enfermagem moderna.

The installation that artist Susan Stockwell has created for the celebrations of Florence Nightingale's birthday, that will take place in the museum dedicated to her in London. Susan Stockwell used an old victorian brass bed and made up a mattress from the many pages taken from the many books written by Nightingale during the long period she spent recovering in bed after her return from the war in Crimea. Florence Nightingale wrote over 200 books, pamphlets and articles on nursing and hospital management that are usually considered as the foundation of modern nursing care.

Publishing as Performance é um evento em torno da edição e da distribuição de livros de artistas integrado no ‘The Publications Project 2009’ uma iniciativa do Dutch Art Institute que se configura como uma plataforma experimental anual de investigação e produção que pretende abordar os processos específicos inerentes à criação de livros de artistas, desde a conceptualização, passando pelo design e chegando à distribuição. Através de diferentes perspectivas e práticas os artistas e designers reflectem sobre a edição como meio versátil.

Book launch of ‘The Publications Project 2009’ by the Dutch Art Institute
The book launch event Publishing As Performance presents a new collection of 16 publications varying from magazines, essays, books, playing cards & artist editions to performance artifacts, all outcomes of the annual ‘The Publications Project’ by the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) edited by artist/curator Delphine Bedel.
The two-fold book launch event expands on the idea of performativity and the circulation of printed matters whereby a series of one-to-one encounters with the artists of the publications is made on a boat touring the canals in the vicinity of Casco. The journey or “a choreography of events” will involve story telling, games, scripted moments that will unwind from the publications.Secondly, ‘Temporary Bookshops’, which is a traveling project by the Berlin-based distribution company Motto will be installed at Casco. Next to the DAI publications, various other publications by artists and designers worldwide will be available for viewing.
‘The Publications Project’ is an experimental annual research and production platform by DAI that aims to address the specific process of artist book production from concept and design to distribution. Since 2003, designers from the Werkplaats Typografie and artists from DAI (both master programmes of the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts) are invited to team up in couples and develop one project, in close collaboration with an author. This year ‘publishing as performance’ emerged as the overriding topic, as a concern central to many of the printed matter produced. Through very diverse perspectives and practices the artists and designers reflect upon publishing as a versatile medium.

"These assemblages are made made from the covers of used books. I seek out those that bring their own history - inscriptions, notations, signs of wear and amateur mending - poignant glimpses into the previous owners' lives. When dipped into melted beeswax, the papers become
translucent, and unexpected details emerge. Sometimes the paper on the inside covers tear in a way that suggests landscape, and I add to these readymade images, painting the moon in various phases and hand-lettering appropriate words from a Latin dictionary. On some, I add tiny diamonds, to suggest stars or lights."

"Kelmscott Press, aquela que é a mais famosa das tipografias privadas, foi criada por William Morris em Hammersmith [Reino Unido] em Janeiro de 1891. Desde essa altura até 1898, a tipografia produziu 53 títulos, num total de 18 000 exemplares. A Kelmscott foi o culminar da experiência Morris como artesão capaz de dominar uma grande diversidade de técnicas. Estava disposto a provar que os elevados padrões de qualidade do passado poderiam ser reproduzidos e até ultrapassados no presente. Os livros produzidos por Morris apresentavam um aspecto medieval e eram decalcados dos incunábulos do século XV. A fonte criada por si, por exemplo, foi inspirada por uma outra criada pelo impressor Nicolaus Jenson de Veneza. Famoso pela harmonia que procurava estabelecer entre tipografia e ilustração, a grande prioridade de Morris era a de encarar cada livro como um todo: tal implicava dedicar um cuidado extremo a todos os aspectos da produção, incluindo a escolha do tipo de papel, do tipo de letra utilizado, do espaçamento entre as letras e da disposição dos textos na página. "Perhaps the most famous of the private presses, William Morris established the Kelmscott Press at Hammersmith in January 1891. Between then and 1898, the press produced 53 books (totalling some 18,000 copies). Kelmscott was the culmination of Morris's life as a craftsman in many diverse fields. He set out to prove that the high standards of the past could be repeated - even surpassed - in the present. The books Morris produced were therefore medieval in design, modelled on the incunabula of the fifteenth century. Morris's roman 'golden' type, for example, was inspired by that of the early printer Nicolaus Jenson of Venice. Noteworthy for their harmony of type and illustration, Morris' main priority was to have each book seen a a whole: this included taking painstaking care with all aspects of production, incuding the paper, the form of type, the spacing of the letters, and the position of the printed matter on the page. Kelmscott books re-awakened the ideals of book design and inspired better standards of production at a time when the printed page was generally at its poorest."

A Blackwell, a cadeia britânica de livrarias especializadas em títulos académicos, vai introduzir nas suas lojas a partir do próximo Outono as Espresso Book Machine, uma máquina de Print on Demand comercializada pela norte-americana On Demand Books.
A EBM está já instalada em 11 outros pontos pelo mundo fora. Permite o acesso a um milhão de títulos, dos quais mais de 600 000 foram licenciados pela Lightning Source, estando os restantes em domínio público.
A máquina imprime, dobra e apara livros em paperback com capas a quatro cores, a pedido e no posto de venda. A versão 1.5 imprime cerca de 40 páginas por minute e tem 3 metros de comprimento e por 2 metros de altura e largura. A versão 2.0, a lançar num futuro próximo, será mais pequena e imprimirá ao dobro da velocidade

StoryCubes - a storytelling tool

StoryCubes é o nome de um dos muitos projectos da Proboscis, uma organização britânica sem fins lucrativos que se dedica à investigação multidisciplinar de aspectos do mundo contemporâneo, particularmente os que dizem respeito às relações comunitárias e às interacções culturais. Cada face do cubo ilustra ou descreve uma ideia, um objecto ou uma acção, e juntas podem criar múltiplas narrativas ou explorar diferentes relacionamentos entre si numa perspectiva tridimensional. Os StoryCubes podem ser montados de duas maneiras diferentes, permitindo contar a mesma história de duas maneiras.
StoryCubes is one of the many projects developed by Proboscis, a British non-profit organization aimed at the investigation of social and cultural relationships. Each face of the cube can illustrate or describe an idea, a thing or an action, placed together it is possible to build up multiple narratives or explore the relationships between them in a novel three-dimensional way. StoryCubes can be folded in two different ways, giving each cube twelve possible faces – and thus two different ways of telling a story.

On 10 May 1933 thousands of books banned by Germany’s National Socialist regime were tossed into flaming pyres. It was a terrifying statement of intent with the Minister for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, redefining his nation’s culture within strict boundaries. (...)

Wolfgang Hermann - part of the Nazi’s Purification Committee - is probably the most infamous librarian in history as he was instrumental in drawing up the list, which was published in Boersenblatt, the trade magazine for the German publishing industry. More than 2,500 authors were deemed fuel for the fires.

'In February 2007, Penguin Books and De Montfort University launched A Million Penguins, a collaborative novel open to anyone who wanted to help write it. The novel was to be created on MediaWiki, the same software as Wikipedia, with a similar ethos of collective authoring but the added spice of a risky experiment in the heartland of commercial publishing. "Can a community write a novel?" asked Penguin Digital Publisher Jeremy Ettinghausen. "Let‘s find out…"
Seeded with a first line taken from a volume in the Penguin Classics series, the wiki invited contributions over a five week period. The result may not have been a novel as we know it, but it certainly produced a community of collaborators who created what John Mackinson, the Chief Executive of Penguin Books, called "not the most read, but possibly the most written novel in history".
The Penguin wikinovel, as it came to be known, touched a nerve in many quarters of the literary world and provoked great excitement in the social media community. The level of reaction in the media and across the web showed that there was a real interest in the project despite the fact that many critics dismissed it as a "PR stunt", "badly written" or, in the words of Jordan Jack writing in the Yale Herald "the worst book I‘ve ever read".
Linux.com solicited the views of Douglas Rushkoff, and the Internet guru was not optimistic: "A Million Penguins looks like fun, but it's still likely to remain more a million penguins than a cohesive or coherent bird", says Rushkoff, who points out that every book needs its author.
Other commentators suggested that the wiki was likely to be a failure, albeit a "delightful" one.
It was certainly unorthodox. The authors who came together were not the usual writerly stereotypes scribbling away alone in attics, but an intriguing mix of "gardeners" intent on nurturing the novel; "vandals" determined to ruin it, and "performers" hoping to make it showcase for their talents. What they created together turned out to be quite unique. Later Ettinghausen would blog: "as the project evolved I think I stopped thinking about it as a literary experiment and started thinking about it more as a social experiment".
A year on, he now says "it‘s the best thing I‘ve ever done … but I would never do it again".'

O romance-wiki da Penguin, como acabou por ficar conhecido, abalou muitos dos quadrantes do mundo literário e provocou um grande entusiasmo na comunidade dos ‘social media’.
As repercussões nos media e através da web provaram que havia um interesse genuíno pelo projecto, apesar de muitos críticos reduzirem todo o projecto a uma “manobra de Relações Públicas”, “má literatura” ou ainda, nas palavras de Jordan Jack no Yale Herald: “o pior livro que alguma vez li”.
Linux.com pediu a opinião de Douglas Rushkoff e o guru da Internet não foi nada optimista: “A Million Penguins é muito divertido mas muito provavelmente continuará a ser um grande grupo de aves sem nunca se chegar a transformar num animal uno e único”, disse Rushkoff chamando a atenção para o facto de todos os livros precisarem de um autor. Outros comentadores sugeriram que a wiki estava destinada ao fracasso, embora um esplendoroso fracasso. Foi certamente uma iniciativa muito pouco ortodoxa. Os autores que congregou não representavam o arquétipo do escritor isolado no seu sótão, mas formavam antes um grupo de “jardineiros” empenhados em alimentarem o romance; “vândalos” determinados a boicotá-lo; e “exibicionistas” alimentando esperanças de dar a conhecer os seus talentos. O que criaram em conjunto acabou por se transformar em algo de fora de vulgar. Mais tarde, Ettinghausen escreveria no seu blog: “à medida que o projecto evoluía deixei de pensar nele como numa experiência literária e mais como uma experiência social". Um ano depois, diria que “foi a melhor coisa que fiz... mas não a voltaria a fazer”.

"A pioneering project from Tara Publishing, India, is the creation of books made entirely by hand, from the paper to the printing and binding. Content, design and craft: all of these come in to our play with the possibilities of the book. Inspired by older forms, we enjoy transforming the richness of Indian visual arts traditions – through contemporary design and artisanal expertise – into fine bookmaking.
So author, artist and book designer work closely with an organised community of book craftsmen. Whether screen printed by hand on handmade paper, or letter-pressed with tipped in pictures, beaded strings and special boxes, each book is individually made, yet matches the price and quality of a mass produced title. The challenge lies in how many times a book has to be handled, while still maintaining quality and perfect printing.
Today our printing unit is a bustling workshop, run on fair trade practices, employing 12 skilled printers and binders. We have so far created a total of 120,000 handmade books worldwide. Our publishing partners range from museums like the Paul Getty Trust in the US, to design houses like Corraini in Italy. Since each page of every book we have ever made is an original print – screen-printed individually this works out to about 6,000,000 impressions in the service of handcrafting the book experience.

"At a time when the notion of the book is challenged by the advent of the screen and computer, this exhibition aims to show the extraordinary ways in which the book has been treated by leading artists of today and the recent past. Blood on Paper will focus on new and contemporary work, and on books where the artist has been the driving force in conception and design. The past twenty years have seen outstanding work by some of the most influential and respected artists of our time.
The exhibition selects books which reveal both the creative process and the soul of the artist in question. Some are iconic works which established the genre of the livre d’artiste after the Second World War; others are surprises from artists who are best known for their work with other sorts of material. Formats and production methods vary enormously. Some works show the virtuosity of traditional ‘hot metal’ printing techniques, others take the commercially-produced book as the starting point of their statements, yet others produce stunning large-scale installations and sculptures.
Seen together, these artists’ books show a truly astonishing inventiveness, many on display to the public for the first time. Artists represented range from Matisse, Picasso and Braque to Anselm Kiefer, Anish Kapoor and Georg Baselitz. Almost all notable artists of the 20th and 21st centuries have produced books, or works that refer to books: those represented will also include Balthus, Louise Bourgeois, Daniel Buren, Anthony Caro, Eduardo Chillida, Francesco Clemente, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Sol Lewitt, Richard Long , Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg and many others whose names are synonymous with art today. 217 Babel Street é um projecto on line de escrita colectiva aberta que usa como metáfora o conceito de um prédio à beira-mar em que a porta de cada apartamento leva a uma história diferente. Os quatro autores - Susanna Jones, Alison MacLeod, Jeff Noon e William Shaw - trabalham independentemente uns dos outros. Novas páginas são criadas a partir de palavras ou expressões marcadas como links. Os autores podem interromper-se uns aos outros e retomar histórias que não sejam suas, levando-as em direcções diferentes. De mês para mês a narrativa muda, alargando-se a novos quartos, novas personagens e novas situações, criando novos percursos para os leitores. A porta da rua permite aceder a todos os apartamentos, onde as diferentes histórias têm início. Todas as personagens mencionadas numa determinada história são listadas ao fundo da página e dão acesso a uma página com a sua descrição, bem como uma lista de todas as páginas em que aparecem.

"217 Babel Street is a web of interconnected stories set in a seaside apartment block. There are twenty apartments in the building. Each of the four writers works independently of the others, starting off stories from different rooms. New pages are produced by creating a link from a word or a phrase on a page that already exists. Writers can interrupt and take over each other’s stories, taking them in different directions. Month by month the narrative changes, expanding into new rooms, characters and situations, creating new pathways for readers to explore.
The front door allows access to any of the apartments, where the different stories begin. All characters mentioned in a given episode are listed at the bottom of the page. Clicking on these character links takes the reader to a page describing the character, as well as a list of all the pages in which they appear."

O trabalho de Stefanie Posavec mostra que a cartografia pode ser usada para algo mais do que a representação do espaço geográfico. Pegando na obra Pela Estrada Fora de Jack Kerouac, a artista propõe a representação da sua estrutura linguística, partindo de um conjunto de regras desenvolvidas por si e que pretendem representar o ritmo da linguagem do autor, os temas abordados na obra e a dimensão das suas frases.

The work of Stefanie Posavec shows that mapping can be used for something more than the representation of geographical space. Taking Jack Kerouc's On the Road, the artist puts forward a representation of its linguist structure according to a set of rules developed by her that represent the author's language, the themes addressed within the book and the length of his sentences.
