Os diários pessoais e políticos de George Orwell on line em forma de blog, postados dia a dia, precisamente 70 anos depois de terem sido escritos, tendo sido iniciada a sua publicação a 9 de Agosto (sendo a data final de Outubro de 1942) . Uma iniciativa Orwell Prize, o prémio britânico para escrita política.

Wordle

Wordle é um software que permite gerar "nuvens de palavras" a partir de um dado texto. As nuvens dão mais proeminência às palavras que aparecem com mais frequência no texto utilizado como fonte. Podem ainda ser trabalhadas com diferentes fontes, layouts e gamas de cores. As imagens criadas podem ser usadas sem restrições, podem ser impressas ou guardadas na galeria do Wordle para serem partilhadas com amigos.

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

Espresso Book Machine

A Blackwell, a cadeia britânica de livrarias especializadas em títulos académicos, vai introduzir nas suas lojas a partir do próximo Outono as Espresso Book Machine, uma máquina de Print on Demand comercializada pela norte-americana On Demand Books.
A EBM está já instalada em 11 outros pontos pelo mundo fora. Permite o acesso a um milhão de títulos, dos quais mais de 600 000 foram licenciados pela Lightning Source, estando os restantes em domínio público.
A máquina imprime, dobra e apara livros em paperback com capas a quatro cores, a pedido e no posto de venda. A versão 1.5 imprime cerca de 40 páginas por minute e tem 3 metros de comprimento e por 2 metros de altura e largura. A versão 2.0, a lançar num futuro próximo, será mais pequena e imprimirá ao dobro da velocidade

He added: "From a retailer's point of view, even allowing for the first-generation technology and publisher challenges, this is a fantastic opportunity — sell to demand with no risk to inventory and an opportunity to create incremental revenue streams for ourselves and publishers."
The EBM is already installed in 11 sites worldwide. It can access around one million titles, of which more than 600,000 come through a partnership with Lightning Source; the rest are in the public domain. (...)
The machine, which On Demand describes as an "ATM for books", prints, binds and trims paperback books with four-colour covers, on demand and at point of sale. StoryCubes - a storytelling tool

StoryCubes é o nome de um dos muitos projectos da Proboscis, uma organização britânica sem fins lucrativos que se dedica à investigação multidisciplinar de aspectos do mundo contemporâneo, particularmente os que dizem respeito às relações comunitárias e às interacções culturais. Cada face do cubo ilustra ou descreve uma ideia, um objecto ou uma acção, e juntas podem criar múltiplas narrativas ou explorar diferentes relacionamentos entre si numa perspectiva tridimensional. Os StoryCubes podem ser montados de duas maneiras diferentes, permitindo contar a mesma história de duas maneiras.
StoryCubes is one of the many projects developed by Proboscis, a British non-profit organization aimed at the investigation of social and cultural relationships. Each face of the cube can illustrate or describe an idea, a thing or an action, placed together it is possible to build up multiple narratives or explore the relationships between them in a novel three-dimensional way. StoryCubes can be folded in two different ways, giving each cube twelve possible faces – and thus two different ways of telling a story.

Podem-se percorrer as várias salas da exposição, explorar cada expositor, assisitir a vídeos e observar ao pormenor os vários documentos em exibição (cartas, manuscritos, edições raras do trabalho do poeta e não só).

A 10 de Maio de 1933, milhares de livros banidos pelo Partido Nacional Socialista alemão foram queimados em piras flamejantes. Foi uma terrível declaração de intenções, através da qual o Ministro para o Esclarecimento Popular e Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, redefinia a cultura do seu país dentro de fronteiras específicas. Wolfgang Hermann - um elemento do Comité para a Purificação do partido nazi - é muito provavelmente o bibliotecário mais infame da História, uma vez que desempenhou um papel fundamental na elaboração da lista, publicada na Boersenblatt, o órgão de informação da indústria editorial alemã. Mais de 2500 autores foram lançados às chamas."

On 10 May 1933 thousands of books banned by Germany’s National Socialist regime were tossed into flaming pyres. Wolfgang Hermann - part of the Nazi’s Purification Committee - is probably the most infamous librarian in history as he was instrumental in drawing up the list, which was published in Boersenblatt, the trade magazine for the German publishing industry. More than 2,500 authors were deemed fuel for the fires.
