We love your books é uma iniciativa de duas professoras de Design Gráfico das universidades de Northampton e De Monfort (Leicester) que reúne trabalhos em torno do livro como objecto único em exposições anuais temáticas desde 2005.

We love your books is a project undertaken by two Graphic Designer teachers at Northampton and De Monfort (Leicester) universities that gathers works around the notion of the book as a single object showcasing them in yearly exhibitions that ran since 2005.

Publishing as Performance

Publishing as Performance é um evento em torno da edição e da distribuição de livros de artistas integrado no ‘The Publications Project 2009’ uma iniciativa do Dutch Art Institute que se configura como uma plataforma experimental anual de investigação e produção que pretende abordar os processos específicos inerentes à criação de livros de artistas, desde a conceptualização, passando pelo design e chegando à distribuição. Através de diferentes perspectivas e práticas os artistas e designers reflectem sobre a edição como meio versátil.

The book launch event Publishing As Performance presents a new collection of 16 publications varying from magazines, essays, books, playing cards & artist editions to performance artifacts, all outcomes of the annual ‘The Publications Project’ by the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) edited by artist/curator Delphine Bedel.
The two-fold book launch event expands on the idea of performativity and the circulation of printed matters whereby a series of one-to-one encounters with the artists of the publications is made on a boat touring the canals in the vicinity of Casco. The journey or “a choreography of events” will involve story telling, games, scripted moments that will unwind from the publications.Secondly, ‘Temporary Bookshops’, which is a traveling project by the Berlin-based distribution company Motto will be installed at Casco. Next to the DAI publications, various other publications by artists and designers worldwide will be available for viewing.
‘The Publications Project’ is an experimental annual research and production platform by DAI that aims to address the specific process of artist book production from concept and design to distribution. Since 2003, designers from the Werkplaats Typografie and artists from DAI (both master programmes of the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts) are invited to team up in couples and develop one project, in close collaboration with an author. This year ‘publishing as performance’ emerged as the overriding topic, as a concern central to many of the printed matter produced. Through very diverse perspectives and practices the artists and designers reflect upon publishing as a versatile medium.

"Estas colagens são feitas a partir de capas de livros usados. Procuro encontrar os que trazem consigo a sua própria história - inscrições, anotações, sinais de uso ou remendos improvisados, vislumbres das vidas dos seus antigos proprietários. Mergulhados em cera de abelha derretida, os papéis tornam-se translúcidos e revelam-se promenores inesperados. Por vezes, o papel no verso das capas apresenta rasgões que sugerem paisagens e acrescento-lhes imagens já trabalhadas, pintando a Lua em várias fases ou manuscrevendo expressões latinas apropriadas resgatadas nalgum dicionário. Noutros, acrescento pequenos diamantes que sugerem estrelas ou focos de luz."

"These assemblages are made made from the covers of used books. I seek out those that bring their own history - inscriptions, notations, signs of wear and amateur mending - poignant glimpses into the previous owners' lives. When dipped into melted beeswax, the papers become
translucent, and unexpected details emerge. Sometimes the paper on the inside covers tear in a way that suggests landscape, and I add to these readymade images, painting the moon in various phases and hand-lettering appropriate words from a Latin dictionary. On some, I add tiny diamonds, to suggest stars or lights."

"Kelmscott Press, aquela que é a mais famosa das tipografias privadas, foi criada por William Morris em Hammersmith [Reino Unido] em Janeiro de 1891. Desde essa altura até 1898, a tipografia produziu 53 títulos, num total de 18 000 exemplares. A Kelmscott foi o culminar da experiência Morris como artesão capaz de dominar uma grande diversidade de técnicas. Estava disposto a provar que os elevados padrões de qualidade do passado poderiam ser reproduzidos e até ultrapassados no presente. Os livros produzidos por Morris apresentavam um aspecto medieval e eram decalcados dos incunábulos do século XV. A fonte criada por si, por exemplo, foi inspirada por uma outra criada pelo impressor Nicolaus Jenson de Veneza. Famoso pela harmonia que procurava estabelecer entre tipografia e ilustração, a grande prioridade de Morris era a de encarar cada livro como um todo: tal implicava dedicar um cuidado extremo a todos os aspectos da produção, incluindo a escolha do tipo de papel, do tipo de letra utilizado, do espaçamento entre as letras e da disposição dos textos na página. Os livros da Kelmscott recuperaram os parâmetros ideiais de produção de livros e inspiraram padrões de produção mais elevados numa época em que a impressão se encontrava na sua fase menos interessante."

"Perhaps the most famous of the private presses, William Morris established the Kelmscott Press at Hammersmith in January 1891. Between then and 1898, the press produced 53 books (totalling some 18,000 copies). Kelmscott was the culmination of Morris's life as a craftsman in many diverse fields. He set out to prove that the high standards of the past could be repeated - even surpassed - in the present. The books Morris produced were therefore medieval in design, modelled on the incunabula of the fifteenth century. Morris's roman 'golden' type, for example, was inspired by that of the early printer Nicolaus Jenson of Venice. Noteworthy for their harmony of type and illustration, Morris' main priority was to have each book seen a a whole: this included taking painstaking care with all aspects of production, incuding the paper, the form of type, the spacing of the letters, and the position of the printed matter on the page. Kelmscott books re-awakened the ideals of book design and inspired better standards of production at a time when the printed page was generally at its poorest."

O e-book será lançado seis semanas antes do lançamento do livro em papel e o lançamento da versão impressa contemplará a distribuição aleatória de exemplares por vários espaços públicos. O e-book poderá ser adquirido através do mini-site criado para efeito. A contagem decrescente já começou.

Faber and Faber will launch Ben Wilson's What price liberty? in e-book format to be downloaded at the price chosen by the consumer, considering even the possibility of getting it for free. The e-book will be released six weeks in advance of the printed book and copies of this will be widely distributed in public places. The e-book can be acquired through a mini-site created for this purpose. The countdown has started.

No momento em que fecha em Londres uma das mais conhecidas livrarias dedicadas aos livros policiais, Murder One, o Guardian Unlimited mostra, numa peça multimédia, as transformações que têm afectado a famosa artéria londrina em tempos dominada por livrarias únicas no mundo: Charing Cross Road.

With the closing of Murder One, a bookshop specialized in crime stories, a new era approaches Charing Cross Road. On Guardian Unlimited a multimedia display shows the different bookshop landscape - before and now - along the famous London road.

Da autoria do Bibliotecário do Trinity College em Cambridge, David McKitterick, esta não é uma obra particularmente bem escrita mas muti elucidativa sobre alguns pormenores técnicos e culturais que caracterizaram a época que vai da invenção da imprensa até à sua consolidação como indústria de pleno direito.

By the Librarian of Cambridge's Trinity College, David McKitterick, this isn't a particularly well written book but one that elucidates some technical and cultural details of the time that goes from the invention of the printing press to the consolidation of the publishing business as an industry in its own right.
